Session recap — 2026-06-03 (combined)

Combined from two recordings (2026-06-03-220353 + 2026-06-03-222336) — the first stopped accidentally mid-session. Re-transcribed with whisper.cpp medium and -mc 0 to kill repetition loops. Speaker labels left anonymous (SPEAKER_00 = DM).

Where we left off

The party (Leaf Ear + Gwrtheryn) was at Trilinar University, Ellswater. Leaf Ear was reading aloud from a controversial book; Gwrtheryn had been refused access to Quillnook’s index and was going to hunt down Magister Hylia Rimehart — and, via her, Professor M. Blaine (applied aetheric energies).

What happened

1. Leaf Ear finishes the Pembe / Caelthas book

The book is by Aldric Pembe, lecturer in pre-Azmedian Historical Mythology, Trilinar University, Ellswater. Author of A Severing Shake — Catastrophic Confabulation (suppressed), Before the Kingdom — Contested Origins of the Azmedian Civilization (withdrawn), and The Aetherium Question (self-published, speculative survey). “He is the only member of his department — not for long.” Written when he was 53; the book is 13 or 30 years old. Open question whether he’s still alive.

Based on 11 interviews over 14 months with an old elf named Caelthas Windrunner (“Caelthas” in earlier readings — likely the same name).

Caelthas’s testimony — “the Shade”:

• He was about six. His people were being herded through a silver wood. Adults wouldn’t explain.
• The world changed underfoot. Soft mossy “heart glow” became hard and dry. “Something left the air, like a door closing in another room.”
• Looked up and saw three moons for the first time. Home had two — one large pale, one small blue-green, “like a stone you might find at the bottom of a clear river.”
• Three pillars of purple and green light — “two things fighting, crackling” — rose from the ground in different places, converged above the moons, became “something that had no business being seen.”
• Creatures came out of the dark. “Hunger that had forgotten what it was for.” Killed without eating, without purpose.
• He survived under his father’s coat. In the morning his parents were simply gone — not dead, not anywhere.
• Aerindel Windrunner — who’d lost her own children, came through “some other crossing, some other door that had been blown open that night” — found him, raised him under the great trees, long since dead. He took her name.

Caelthas, on whether the Shade is over:

“It is not finished. The shade was not an ending. It was a door closing, and doors that close can open. The world I came from is still there. I feel it sometimes… and something in it is still alive.”

Pembe’s thesis (the last part of the book):

The Elven people did not originate in Karneia. They came here from a sealed-off or destroyed realm — a place of extraordinary light and living magic — from which they were violently expelled by the Shade. The elves of Karneia are scattered remnants who lost everything in a single night. Caelthas is the only one who would talk about it.

2. Gwrtheryn hunts down a magister

• After Leaf Ear walks off, focus shifts to Gwrtheryn. He stalks the library asking strangers for Hylia Rimehart. Mostly gets shushed.
• Following directions, he heads to the 14th door — but counting puts it at the 15th. Brass plaque reads “Magister [unclear: ‘Pelletely’ / ‘Baliately’]” — not a doctor, a magister. Not Hylia Rimehart — the door was apparently still right, just mis-numbered.
• Opens onto: a human woman, early 50s, brownish-greying hair, well-worn academic robes, holding a pipe in one hand and a match in the other. The office is a hodgepodge — books on shelves, paintings on the walls.
• Among the paintings is a field sketch that matches the ones the party had already found.
• Her door notably has no teaching post listed. She’s a researcher, not a lecturer — and the only person at the university interested in what she’s studying.

3. The apple, the deception, and the lecture on Aetherium

• She offers Gwrtheryn an apple. Remarks: “Folks from the Shadowfell, they tend to… it doesn’t grow so well there, does it?” — i.e. she identifies him as Shadowfell without being told. “If it were not for your appearance, you would not be left standing where you are.”
• Asked his name, Gwrtheryn gives “Scutidino” [unclear, possibly a deception — DM called for a Deception check].
• She delivers a long lecture on Aetherium crystals:
  • Not a battery. A planar superconductor.
  • The crystal lattice is attuned to lunar frequencies of Karneia’s three moons — Lunara, Celenia, and Oboros.
  • When magic passes through the purple lattice, the spell’s vibrational frequency syncs to the ambient lunar resonance, creating a zero-resistance conduit. Energy normally lost in the transition from the Weave to the material plane is recaptured and fed back into the spell.
  • “Turns a standard spark into a localised solar flare.”
  • Process name: “subatomic weave compression” — she admits half the terminology is invented.
• Geography: Aetherium crystals come from a region between two confirmed sources — the Dwarven underground cities of Dhil Garom and Dhil Armargh, far to the north.
• Connecting the dots: this is what’s behind Bramwell’s pen (now in Mouse’s possession — writes permanently in a code only certain people can read) and Mouse’s gun (Aetherium core, boosted potency + new magical effect). Two of the party’s magic items are Aetherium-augmented.
• Earlier in the conversation Gwrtheryn’s Aetherium Compass had pointed at her desk — confirming she has Aetherium on hand.

4. The Shadowfell admission and the deal

• Gwrtheryn’s compass + her diagnosis put it on the table: he is from the Shadowfell. He concedes his homeland is “a political minefield where factions vie for power,” and Aetherium there has been misused — politicised.
• The crystals are rarer than rare in the Shadowfell; the only way to get them is to travel to the material plane, and those passageways are heavily controlled by the authorities in Noswyl. The government created the Aetherium Compass to track down (and police) the caves.
• As Gwrtheryn moves to leave, she calls him back. Persuasion at Advantage — succeeded.
• Deal struck: Gwrtheryn becomes a benefactor of her research; she shares findings and will keep him updated. She suggests “less than 250 gold per hour would be a very healthy start.”
• Gwrtheryn hands over 50 platinum pieces (≈ 500gp). She has seen platinum before but never held it — she is passionate, not wealthy.
• Mechanism for regular updates: Sending spell (3rd level, same tier as Fireball).

5. Out-of-character / wrap

• Party debrief on alignment (Mouse, Stars, Gwrtheryn), shopping plans (ship: a launch or sailing ship at 10,000gp per the DMG; ~2gp/day upkeep), infusions (cloak of elvenkind already made), and the long-term goal of stopping the shadow monsters before they kill everybody. Reference to a previous “fight bomb” / explosion in April [unclear].
• DM called it for the night.

• Aldric Pembe — lecturer, Trilinar/Trilinar University, Ellswater. Author of the book Leaf Ear is reading. May or may not still be alive.
• Caelthas Windrunner — ancient elf, the Shade survivor; Pembe’s primary source.
• Aerindel Windrunner — Caelthas’s adoptive mother; deceased. Came through some other crossing.
• Quillnook — crotchety gnome librarian. Refused Gwrtheryn access to the index.
• Magister Hylia Rimehart — still being sought. Was the original target.
• Professor M. Blaine — applied aetheric energies; Gwrtheryn’s intended next stop via Hylia.
• Magister [unclear: “Pelletely” / “Baliately”] — human researcher, early 50s, no teaching post. Aetherium specialist. Identified Gwrtheryn as Shadowfell on sight. Now allied as a research client.
• Bramwell — owner of the magic pen Mouse now carries.
• Anne Giffen — Stars’s “new partner on the physical plane”; a privateer in service to the state.

Decisions made

• Patronage arrangement with the Aetherium magister: 50 platinum up front, ongoing payments, Sending-based updates.
• Gwrtheryn willingly revealed he’s from the Shadowfell to her — a real opsec choice given how restricted the crossings are.
• Party drifting toward buying a ship as a next step.

• No item rewards this session — money flowed outward (50pp to the magister).
• Inspiration awarded by the DM mid-scene.

Open threads / hooks

• What is on those field sketches on the magister’s wall, and why does the party already have copies?
• Lunara, Celenia, Oboros — the three moons are now named and mechanically relevant. Karneia’s cosmology is the engine behind Aetherium. Caelthas’s two-vs-three-moons memory ties directly into this.
• Dhil Garom and Dhil Armargh — Dwarven cities to the north, near the Aetherium source. New geographical target.
• The Aetherium Compass is a government surveillance tool, not a research aid. Noswyl authorities will care that Gwrtheryn has one.
• Gwrtheryn’s homeland politics — factions, misuse of Aetherium. He owes the magister context he hasn’t shared yet.
• Hylia Rimehart and Professor M. Blaine — original goal still unmet.
• Is Pembe still alive? Worth following up in Ellswater.
• “The shade was not an ending” — Caelthas’s warning is foreshadowing, not flavour text.

Memorable moments

• The DM cursing at YouTube ads twice mid-Caelthas monologue (“Fucking thing!”, “Just like these fucking adverts.”). Vow to pre-download next time.
• Player aside about a father-in-law running a Raspberry Pi “pie hole” to filter ads.
• Year-3 schoolkids not knowing where tap water comes from. “They’re not on the water table yet — that’s year four.”
• The magister offering Gwrtheryn an apple as a quiet way of saying “I already know what you are.”
• “Turns a standard spark into a localised solar flare.”
• The hand-over of platinum: an academic who’d seen the coins but never held them.
• Long alignment debate at the end — “this is kind of the problem with the alignment system” — followed immediately by “Stars, having discovered black powder, is now definitely chaotic.”
